Exploring a System of Magic

The concept behind the Arcane District was to begin capturing a completely different aspect of the Puzzlebox world to SCORCHED. Far from the atmospheric, post-apocalyptic world that SCORCHED captured, the Arcane District focuses on the world of wizardry. However, for these releases, we did not want to capture the distinctive soundscape of what that district would sound like, but instead the spells and ambiences associated with the different arcana.

Whilst the base concept is spell-casting, we wanted to provide a further level of immersion. In approaching this, it became clear that this part of the Puzzlebox world would not be defined by environment alone, but by the structure and behaviour of the magic within it. This led to the spell crafting system we employed, which allows the packs to be used interchangeably. With the Charge, Cast, Projectile, Impact system, this allows for a spell with a charging of arcane magic, a putrid cast of corruption magic, a lightning projectile, finalised with an impact of dark void magic.

In the same manner that SCORCHED captured the essence of its part in the Wasteland series, we wanted the first three libraries from the Arcane District Collection to capture the raw essence of the spell-casting process.

The Puzzlebox world is already beginning to take shape. With SCORCHED capturing the expanse of annihilation and the Arcane District Collection touching on a mystical part of a city still unexplored, we are very excited to introduce more of the Puzzlebox world as the months progress.
